Addressing the seminar “Economic Summit Serbia 2007” in Belgrade, Jeremic said that Serbia is ready to give up a lot in the process of resolving the issue of the future status of Kosovo-Metohija, but cannot compromise its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In case of a unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo, Serbia will declare that decision invalid and use all diplomatic means to avoid such an eventuality, said Jeremic.
He recalled the process of reforms and democratisation which Serbia has implemented until now and expressed the fear that all results of this hard work could disappear in case of a negative result of negotiations.
Jeremic also criticised statements that a unilateral declaration would be recognised if a compromise is not reached until December 10, and added that efforts are being made to remove all deadlines.
The Minister said that it is very important that Serbia and the Kosovo delegation have finally begun direct negotiations in Brussels, and pointed to the fact that removing deadlines will make the process of negotiations much easier.
For us December 10 is important, but it is not a crucial date, said Jeremic and stressed that recognising the independence of Kosovo-Metohija would have a negative influence on the Serbian and regional economies since political instability will discourage foreign investors.
