Addressing
the OSCE conference on “Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims” in Cordoba, Jeremic said that solving the Islamic issue in Europe is vital for the future, for the way Europe perceives itself and the way in which others in the world perceive it, especially in the Muslim world.
Europe should become leader in interfaith reconciliation, Jeremic said and added that building partnership among civilisations is a two-way process.
Speaking on the Balkans, the Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs said that Islam has been present in the region for over six centuries and recalled that relations between Christian and Muslim communities in Serbia have not always been exemplary and that there were inequalities, torture, tensions and misunderstandings.
This is part of Serbia’s historic legacy and we are trying to correct the mistakes of the past, said Jeremic and added that the Muslims and the Christians have lived mostly in peace in the past 100 years.
He pointed out that dedication of all countries in the region in cooperation with the Hague tribunal shows that efforts are being made today for the sake of reconciliation.
Jeremic noted that the Serbian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and bans religious discrimination.
He added that Serbia pledges for cherishing tradition and religious pluralism and tolerance.
We expect that we will become a regional role model of interfaith co-existence and dialogue, the Minister said.
