In a statement to the news agency Tanjug, Dragin recalled that June 5 was established as World Environment Day in Stockholm precisely at the demand of a delegation of the former Yugoslavia in 1978.
He said that at the conference which will include all EU countries, Russia, Canada and the US, a debate will be held on environmental protection policy which will be conducted in the entire developed world during the next three to five years.
The Minister said that this conference also has great significance for our scientific circles, considering the fact that one of the documents which will be adopted at this gathering will be the decision on founding a regional centre for monitoring climate changes in Belgrade.
According to Dragin, the gathering has great economic significance for the Serbian tourism industry since all hotels are completely booked for the upcoming week.
On the other hand, the conference also gives us the opportunity to establish good cooperation with ministers from other countries which will also result in starting a few projects for which Serbia will seek financial support from European and other funds, said Dragin.
He voiced hope that the conference will contribute to improving Serbia’s international image. He added that this is very important for us due to all the problems which we are facing currently, and due to the opportunity to show that Serbia is a good host and a country which takes care of all aspects of its citizens’ lives.
