Serbian Commissioner for Refugees Dragisa Dabetic said today at the 58th UN General Assembly Session for refugees that the future status of Kosovo-Metohija must be based on mutually acceptable solution, founded on international law, including the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia.
Dabetic told Tanjug that he told the participants of the session that there are nearly half a million refugees and IDPs in Serbia, which unfortunately makes us record holders in Europe.
He added that there are over 10 million refugees and 11 million IDPs in the whole world according to UNHCR.
Dabetic spoke of problems in implementing the Sarajevo Declaration signed by Serbia-Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as on the issue of tenant rights and revalidation of exiled Serbs from Croatia.
Serbia still needs substantial funds to solve the issue of refugees and IDPs, he underlined.
He pointed out that UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said that UNHCR fully supports implementation of the Sarajevo Declaration and that open issues, such as tenant rights in Croatia, must be soon on the agenda.
Guterres said he is aware of the complex situation in Serbia and that Serbia can still count on UNHCR’s support.
The regular 58th annual meeting of UNHCR's 72-nation governing Executive Committee is taking place in Geneva from October 1 to 5.
