Speaking on the bill on amendments to the Citizenship Law in Serbian parliament, Jocic said that Montenegrin citizens who have resided in Serbia since June 3, 2006, could obtain Serbian citizenship in a simplified procedure without losing right to Montenegrin citizenship.
He explained that those Montenegrin citizens lost their right to Serbian citizenship after Montenegro got independent status, and according to amendments some 250,000 of these citizens will get Serbian citizenship in a simplified procedure.
Montenegrin citizenship is foreign citizenship and in this manner Montenegrin citizens could be given Serbian citizenship without losing their original status, explained Jocic.
According to Jocic, the bill on amendments to this law is completely in harmony with the new Serbian Constitution.
Jocic said that the bill on amendments to the Citizenship Law states that Serbian and Montenegrin citizenship following the independence of Montenegro ceased to be parts of a joint citizenship and are now completely separate citizenships.
He pointed to the fact that the amendments proposed are prepared according to a concept whose solutions should determine the regulation, acquisition and cessation of Serbian citizenship, continuity of citizenship, prevention of segregation and discrimination, simplification of process of obtaining citizenship for Montenegrin citizens, and equalising the status of Montenegrin citizens with the status of citizens of the republics of former Yugoslavia.
