Serbian Minister of Youth and Sports Snezana Samardzic-Markovic yesterday officially took over the flag of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) on behalf of the Serbian government. Until the end of 2009, the flag will remain in Belgrade which will be the host of the 25th Summer Universiade.
At the ceremony at the Serbian government, FISU Director-General Eric Saintrond handed over the flag to Samardzic-Markovic.
She said that it is a great honour for Serbia to host the Universiade in the year when it celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The flag of the Universiade represents an obligation for Serbia to speed up the preparations and be ready for the arrival of guests in 2009.
Saintrond said that during more than 15 days of the Universiade, Serbian citizens will be hosts to athletes from more than 180 states, adding that in July 2009 the entire world will focus on Belgrade and Serbia.
Director-General of "Universiade 2009" company Sinisa Jasnic said that this company, with the support of the Serbian government, will fulfill the promise given upon taking over the flag in Bangkok, and that is that in 2009 it will organise the best Universiade ever.
