The reception for the players was also attended by representatives of the Basketball Federation of Serbia with the president of the organisation Dragan Kapicic, as well as Serbian State Secretary for sport Vljako Senic and Serbian Assistant Minister Aleksandar Sostar.
Samardzic-Markovic recalled that representatives of the ministry had great expectations of the top Serbian basketball players, but stressed that despite their failure, she considers that this team which won titles in the past will show its worth in the future.
Victory and defeat are part of sport. I appeal to the public to be just towards the Basketball Federation, keeping in mind the fact that young teams achieved top results this summer at an international level, and not to be harsh in judging the performance of the senior team in Spain, said the Minister.
She said that the team which represented Serbia at the European Championship is a good team, and added that they should be given time to consolidate.
Keep your spirits up. Tomorrow will be different from today. I am proud of you. Better times will come and victories await you. Taking part in sport is a struggle, but it is also a noble occupation, and being a basketball player in Serbia is a great honour, said Samardzic-Markovic.
Despite the worst result ever in the European Championship in the history of Serbian basketball, she congratulated the team for their effort, and expressed conviction that Serbia has a great future in basketball.
