Serbian Minister of Public Administration and Local Self Governments Milan Markovic submitted today for committal the ratification instrument for the European Charter of Local Self-Government to Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary General Terry Davis in the seat of the CoE in Strasbourg.

Markovic said on the occasion that ratification of the European Charter of Local Self-Governments by the end of July in Serbian parliament and today’s ceremony present a step forward in strengthening democracy on the local level.
Davis said that he highly values what the Minister of Public Administration and Local Self Government has accomplished in the previous period regarding European legislation and in activities connected to the presidency of the CoE committee of ministers.
The Minister today, during his visit to the seat of the CoE also talked with several officials of this organisation.
In a telephone statement for the news agency Beta, Markovic said he talked on solutions in the Serbian Constitution and their further implementation through laws with Deputy Secretary of the Venetian Commission Thomas Markert.
He said that during the meeting with Director General of Political Affairs Jean Louis Laurens it was discussed that it is necessary to accelerate current legislative activities with respect to 44 laws which are part of the action plan.
Markovic is visiting Strasbourg at an invitation by CoE Secretary General Terry Davis.
Serbian parliament ratified the European Charter of Local Self Government at the session held on July 23 this year.
