Jeremic told a joint press conference that the solution to the Kosovo-Metohija issue must be one which could facilitate quicker integration of the region into the EU, and not to make it harder.
He warned that any imposed solution, particularly a unilateral one, would significantly slow down the integration process and make it more difficult. He stressed that it is extremely important that negotiations on Kosovo-Metohija begin again.
I call upon the two sides once more to work together to reach a solution which will be the result of the widest possible consensus, said the Minister and pointed to the fact that imposing a solution would set a dangerous precedent and destabilise not only Serbia and the Balkans region, but also have a negative affect on other parts of the world.
Jeremic said that the plan which Serbia presented at
yesterday’s meeting in Vienna is a very generous offer since it envisages the widest possible autonomy which Kosovo-Metohija did not have even under the 1974 Constitution.
Kalfin said that Bulgaria insists that the solution for Kosovo-Metohija be based upon international law and UN resolutions, and added that Bulgaria will continue to work on creating an atmosphere which would lead to a solution acceptable to both sides based on the widest possible consensus.
In that context he said that the current negotiations mediated by the troika of envoys and pointed to the fact that dialogue became possible due to the constructive stand taken by the Serbian government.
Kalfin said that the Bulgarian government is willing to help Serbia in every possible way to make integration of the country into the EU and NATO as fast as possible.
The two foreign ministers agreed that relations between Bulgaria and Serbia were conducted at this high level before and pledged to make them more intensive.
Jeremic and Kalfin signed a joint statement at the conclusion of the meeting on priorities in bilateral relations between the two ministries.
