The hand book compiles texts used in education for municipal gender focal points organised by the OSCE Mission from 2002 to 2006 and will be used in future training courses for gender focal points.
Ljajic said at the book promotion that no country can boast that it has fully realised gender equality and promoted the position of women, and for Serbia it is one of conditions for EU’s full membership.
He stressed that the first task is to accomplish good coordination between the line ministry, parliament’s Committee for Gender Equality and institutions and mechanisms at a local level.
Serbia should first adopt a crucial systemic law, i.e., a general anti-discrimination law as well as a national strategy for improvement of position of women, especially those living in rural areas and those disabled, the Minister said.
Ljajic also said that women partake with less than 5% in power in Serbia and stressed that this reality needs to be changed.
He added that according to surveys in nine EU countries, existing laws are scarcely applied.
Urstad said that equality of women in public life is crucial for a stable and sustainable democracy.
The presentation was also attended by State Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy Snezana Lakicevic-Stojacic and Assistant Minister in charge of gender equality Natalija Micunovic.
After the book launch, 30 municipal gender trainees received certificates of achievement.
