In a statement for the Radio Television of Serbia, Ljajic was unable to specify the exact increase in pensions, but stressed that pensions will not be equal to salaries since that is impossible considering the current condition of the economy.
According to law, when pensions fall below 60% of the average salary, extraordinary harmonisation becomes necessary, and considering the fact that the pension has fallen to 53%, harmonisation will take place on January 1 when all pensions will be increased, explained the Minister.
He stressed that the law recommends that the lowest pension should not fall below 20% of the average salary, and currently it is below 19%.
Ljajic pointed to the fact that of 1.5 million pensioners in Serbia 400,000 receive less than RSD 8,000 monthly, adding that the state does not look upon them as a burden rather through active dialogue it will try to resolve their problems.
It is necessary that pensions are harmonized not just with living expenses, as envisaged by the law, but they also must be adjusted to growth in salaries, concluded the Minister.
