At a joint press conference held with Montenegrin Minister of Foreign Affairs Milan Rocen, Jeremic said that during his meeting with Rocen he acquainted the Montenegrin Minister with Belgrade’s position that any form of independence of Kosovo-Metohija is absolutely unacceptable.
The Minister warned that any unilateral move at this stage of the conflict resolution process may be perilous for stability in the region.
It is highly important that we concentrate on the preservation of stability, said Jeremic.
The Serbian and Montenegrin foreign ministers said their countries have friendly and close relations, though there is room for advancement of bilateral cooperation.
Jeremic and Rocen said that relations between Serbian and Montenegro are extremely important and the stability of the region in this phase of resolving the Kosovo-Metohija issue depends on that to a great extent.
Jeremic expressed satisfaction due to the positive development of relations between the two countries following the secession of Montenegro and said that Belgrade will advocate close and substantial ties with Podgorica.
He said Serbia will continue to provide support to Montenegro citizens abroad in countries where Montenegro does not have diplomatic representation.
According to Jeremic, the Serbian embassy in Montenegro will soon begin to work, but it is not known yet who will be appointed ambassador.
Rocen said that Serbia and Montenegro have very close relations although the public impression is not such. He reiterated that Montenegro has remained essentially the same after achieving independence.
The Montenegrin foreign minister stressed that the joint past and the cultural, economic and family relations are an excellent basis for joint strategic and European aims.
He thanked Serbia for providing assistance to Montenegrin citizens abroad and added he is in favour of the announcement on majority presence of Serbian investors in Montenegro.
Rocen was particularly pleased that the number of Serbian tourists in Montenegro is increasing and said that in the first half of 2007 it increased by 13%.
Jeremic and Rocen signed today the Agreement on Procedure of Sub-Regional Weapons Control which was verified by the former state union of Serbia and Montenegro.
During his visit to Podgorica, Jeremic will talk with Montenegrin Prime Minister Zeljko Sturanovic and on that occasion expressed satisfaction with the continuation of successful cooperation with Montenegro and establishment of good neighbourly relations.
Serbia and Montenegro have had a long positive history and will have a positive common future in the EU and other institutions, Jeremic said.
The two governments should improve institutional cooperation by signing a series of bilateral agreements, Jeremic said adding that it is also necessary to carry on with the activities on defining a permanent solution for the location of embassies in Belgrade and Podgorica.
Sturanovic said that regional cooperation is one of Montenegro's top priorities, and building closest ties with Serbia the top priority.
Speaking about Kosovo-Metohija, Sturanovic said that Montenegro's position has been clear from the very beginning which is that it believes that Belgrade and Pristina, with the help of the international community, will find a sustainable solution that guarantees stable and lasting relations.
He added that with her example, Montenegro is showing that harmonious multiethnic and multi-religious relations can exist in the Balkans.
