Ljajic said at a press conference that the European Union proclaimed 2007 as "European Year of Equal Opportunities", and that the campaign in Serbia is a part of it.
He said that apart from the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, a number of non-governmental organisations dealing with disabled persons and the People's Office of the President of the Republic are taking part in the campaign.
The Minister said that the estimated number of disabled persons is between 500,000 and 800,000.
Ljajic said that it is necessary that Serbia signs and then initials the International Convention on Rights of Disabled Persons as soon as possible, since that is a binding document that would enable the implementation of appropriate standards in everyday life.
He recalled that the Law on prevention of discrimination of disabled persons and the Strategy for improvement of their position were adopted and voiced hope that the Council for disabled persons will be formed soon which will be made up of representatives of disability organisations and all ministries.
The Minister warned that a great number of disabled persons have an income below the subsistence level, and that 50% of them receive some kind of aid from the state.
