Participating in a debate “Media – Public Opinion – Politics”, Janjic said that privatisation of the media should be completed by the end of 2007 and announced a debate on problems that the media of minority communities are facing.
He said that the Ministry received initiatives to leave out media of minority communities from privatisation, which will not be accepted for now. However, protection for those media will be sought through a public debate, Janjic added.
According to him, changes that need to be included in laws to adjust them to the Serbian Constitution and EU standards will also be discussed by the end of the year.
Janjic said that for the establishment of Serbia's media system it is very good that the public service has been established, which is not financed from the budget, but from subscriptions, and the broadcasting agency which manages frequencies.
He said that the media should develop mechanisms of self-regulation, adding that the code of journalists of Serbia, adopted last year, is a good step forward.
The debate, organised by the Centre for Democracy with the support of Olaf Palma International Centre and Friedrich Ebert Foundation, was also attended by Vice-President of the Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia Djordje Vlajic, Commissioner for Information of Public Importance Rodoljub Sabic, representatives of the Institute of Social Sciences, the Novi Sad school of journalism, as well as representatives of many media houses.
