Serbian Minister of Environmental Protection Sasa Dragin said today that the Serbian government invested a total of RSD 113 million in restoration of localities Reljan, Borovac, Pljackovica, Bratoselce, which were contaminated with depleted uranium.
Dragin visited Reljan and Borovac in municipalities Presevo and Bujanovac where cleansing work was done to remove effects of projectiles with depleted uranium which hit these areas in 1999. Following the visit he said that cleaning of the terrain was completed successfully in all the southern Serbia areas mentioned.
He stressed that expert teams of the VINCA Institute of Nuclear Science and the Serbian Army cleaned the said locations thus making it possible for residents of the municipalities of Bujanovac, Presevo and Vranje to continue their lives without the threat of radioactivity.
The Minister said that during the NATO military action in 1999 weapons with depleted uranium were fired at 98 locations in Kosovo-Metohija.
I hope that the UNMIK will clean these locations or work together with us, said Dragin.
