Milosavljevic said on the occasion that the Health Ministry began an action to raise awareness among the public regarding the harmful effects of smoking in 2002.
He explained that at the beginning the action was an initiative taken by individuals, and the first task was to make the Health Ministry a non-smoking zone, and in that respect Serbian Assistant Minister Snezana Simic deserves the highest praise.
According to Milosavljevic, later the action was supported by the National Smoking Prevention Committee, the European Agency for Reconstruction and the EU.
Milosavljevic stressed that in 2002 it seemed impossible to reduce the number of smokers in Serbia and to explain to citizens that smoking is harmful to their health, but health surveys in 2006 showed that now there are 5% less active smokers in Serbia than at the beginning of the action.
