Serbian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic said today that his ministry will provide funds for expansion of the home for children and youth “Spomenik”, and to put in use an existing facility, for the home for the blind and vision-impaired persons in Pancevo.
Ljajic said after visiting these establishments that the quality of service must be raised.
We wish to show that not a single social group can be forgotten, and that is especially true for groups which are in need of help and support from society and the state, said Ljajic.
He said that it is important that as few children as possible live in such establishments, not because the homes are bad, but due to the fact that placing them in families is better and more humane.
Regarding homes for the blind, Ljajic said that it is unacceptable that six to seven blind or vision-impaired persons reside in one room.
The home for the blind and vision-impaired persons is used by 137 persons from 17 to 90 years of age, and in the children’s’ home “Spomenik” there are 61 children between the ages of seven to 18.
