On the occasion of observation of June 29, International Danube Day, held at the Argus laboratory ship, Dragin said that the major polluters of the Danube are those in industrial zones, such as Pancevo and Backa Palanka, and added that they should set up purification filters.
He said that installation of those filters requires great investments, but that after signing the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, EU pre-accession funds will be opened, so water pollution should be reduced with joined funds of the Serbian government, the provincial authorities and the EU.
On the Argus, Dragin made an analysis of water sample taken from the Danube between Belgrade and Pancevo which showed that pH value of the water is within normal limits.
The Minister announced that during summer, Argus will go on an expedition along the entire course of the Danube river, from Regensburg to Danube's delta, and samples of water and sediments will be taken from the bottom of the river to assess water quality.
The expedition is a joint project of 13 signatory countries of the Convention on cooperation on protection and sustainable use of the Danube River, among which is Serbia, and Danube Day is celebrated in the memory of this convention which was adopted on June 29, 1994.
