Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic and European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said today in Brussels that Serbia and the EU may complete negotiations by the end of September and to sign the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) by the end of the year.

Jeremic said at a joint press conference with Rehn that the necessary requirements are achieving full cooperation with the Hague tribunal. In that case, Serbia could expect to get EU candidate status in late 2008.
Olli Rehn welcomed the activities of the Serbian government that led to resumption of negotiations on SAA.
Jeremic and Rehn agreed that the process of resolution of future status of Kosovo must take place in the UN Security Council and that Serbia's EU accession and resolution of Kosovo's status are two completely separate processes.
Rehn said that both one-sided recognition of Kosovo's independence and one-sided action in the Security Council in reaching a decision on the status of Kosovo are unacceptable.
Jeremic said that a mutually acceptable solution for the Kosovo problem can be sought through well prepared negotiations because only in that way Serbia and the western Balkans can have a European future.
According to Jeremic, the only thing that all Serbian leaders will not accept is to negotiate on Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Serbia would reconsider its bilateral relations with any country that would jeopardise its territorial integrity and sovereignty, Jeremic said and underlined that Serbia expects countries of the region to act carefully when it comes to the issue of Kosovo's status.
