Following the meeting with Scheffer, Jeremic said they agreed that the situation in the province is complex and added that the Secretary General said Kfor will do all it can to protect peace and stability in the region.
He said he acquainted Scheffer with Belgrade’s position that independence of Kosovo-Metohija is completely unacceptable and that apart from political and diplomatic talks, absolute priority must be given to the preservation of peace and stability both in the province and the region.
The Minister said he also talked with Scheffer about the necessity of close cooperation between the Serbian Army and NATO through Partnership for Peace programmes.
I asked that as part of these programmes, Serbia should be given data on locations which were targeted during the NATO 1999 bombing so that unexploded cluster bombs could be removed, said Jeremic.
We also agreed that this should be one of the priorities of cooperation through the Partnership for Peace, said the Minister and explained that terrain clear-up could be carried out by the Serbian Army on one side of the demonstrative border, and by Kfor on the other.
Jeremic, who is on a two-day visit to Brussels, will talk today with EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and Chairwoman of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with Southeast European countries Doris Pack.
