Serbian parliament Speaker Oliver Dulic said following the signing that in the upcoming period the parliament expects important legislative activity connected to the status and property of local self-governments and citizens’ lives.
He stressed that it is very important that the municipal is recognised as a state organ unit which can carry out further democratisation of society, and added that Serbian parliament has launched an initiative for providing space in every municipality where parliament members may meet with citizens and talk about their problems.
SKGO President Zeljko Ozegovic stressed that signing of the protocol gives a strong message to all local self-governments that they should become important pillars of our society.
According to Ozegovic, the strategic aim of the Serbian government is joining the EU, and accepting European standards and measures, of which one of the most important is the European Charter of Local Self-Government which defines fully the financial and legal autonomy of these bodies.
