The Ministers’ Deputies of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe stressed in the declaration the determination to build a humane society, based on the principles of justice, freedom, solidarity, tolerance, equality, respect of differences and reconciliation based on healing wounds from the past.
Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe said that the 1000th session of the Minister’s Deputies is a special event, not just because it is a jubilee, but also due to the fact that is being held in Belgrade, unlike other meetings at this level.
This is a special event in many ways. A 1000th meeting takes place only once, and it is very important that we came to Belgrade on this occasion and came out of Strasbourg, said Davis in a recess during the session, at a joint press conference with Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic.
Jeremic stressed that by holding this historical jubilee session in Belgrade, great confidence has been shown in Serbia and the country has been honoured. He pointed to the importance of the CoE in safeguarding and promoting democracy and peace in Europe.
The debate at the Minister’s Deputies session was introduced by CoE Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg and the session was also addressed by Chair of the Rapporteur Group on Democracy Stephen Howarth.
The session will continue in the afternoon, with a discussion on regional cooperation and the aims of the South-East European Cooperation Process, on which a report will be presented by Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Todor Churov.
It is expected that Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic will also take part in this discussion.
