Serbian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic said today that the most vulnerable categories of the population, including mentally disturbed children, the elderly and the disabled, must not be abandoned and forgotten by society.
During a visit to the Centre for Mentally Disturbed Children and Youths in Sremcica, which hosts more than 300 girls, boys and youths aged from 5 to 25, Ljajic said that he plans to visit similar institutions throughout Serbia so that the public would get interested in their problems and thus help improve the quality of services of such institutions.
Ljajic said that the Ministry's strategy for this part of population will be based on helping them become independent. The Ministry has bought apartments for 23 users of this Centre's services. In this way, the effects of this strategy will be seen.
Director of the Centre in Sremcica Misa Curovic said that this is one of the best institutions of this type in Serbia, of which there are a total of 18.
The Centre has 145 employees, including special teachers, psychologists, doctors and other medical staff who take care of the children in this institution.
