The central observation ceremony in Belgrade took place at the Trg Republike Square where Serbian President Boris Tadic and Serbian Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic donated blood as part of the campaign organised by the Serbian Blood Transfusion Institute.
Milosavljevic said that the campaign held at the Trg Republike Square showed it only takes a small incentive to achieve good results, because thanks to such campaigns the number of blood donors increases year on year.
I am certain we will not give up on this basic strategic plan to make blood donating an acceptable act for the majority of our citizens and that there will not be shortages in blood supplies in any part of Serbia, said Milosavljevic.
At the premises of the Serbian Red Cross the Minister also attended an award ceremony at which awards were given for successful motivation of blood donors in residential areas where there is more than 5% of voluntary blood donors.
The slogan of this year’s World Blood Donor Day observation is “Do Your Best Today, Donate Your Blood!“ and the day is being observed in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organisation and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
According to the Serbian Blood Transfusion Institute’s data, 4% of Serbia’s population must become regular blood donors for the coutnry to have sufficient blood supplies.
