The six-month chairmanship of the executive body of the CoE, from May to November 2007, was handed over to Draskovic by his counterpart from San Marino Fiorenzo Stolfi, at the end of the 117th session of the Committee of Ministers in Strasbourg.
On occasion of taking over the chairmanship, Draskovic said that Serbia is determined to see a Europe without wars and borders, as expressed in the slogan of this chairmanship “One Europe – Our Europe.”
In that framework, Draskovic said, Serbia has defined four main priorities which are promotion of basic values of the CoE, fight against terrorism and organised crime, building a humane Europe, and especially the promotion of the values and aims of the CoE in South East Europe.
Speaking on the Balkans, Draskovic said that everyone in Europe is obliged to “persistently plant the seeds of shared European values and qualities” in the region, stressing that today the most important obligation of Europe is not to allow the forceful alteration of existing state borders in the Balkans.
At this 117th session of the CoE Committee of Ministers in Strasbourg, Montenegro participated for the first time, and was declared the new 47th member of the CoE.
