There were two candidates for the position, Milena Milosevic, who was nominated by the Democratic Party, and Tomislav Nikolic, nominated by the Serbian Radical Party.
Acting parliament speaker Borka Vucic recommended that voting should be public. This recommendation was unanimously adopted by parliament and the speaker of parliament was elected using this method of voting.
Among the 244 members of parliaments present, 142 voted for Tomislav Nikolic, and 99 for Milena Milosevic. One parliament member abstained.
Today’s debate on the election of speaker continued the constitutive session of Serbian parliament, which began on February 14, when the mandates of 250 newly elected members were verified and the Resolution on Kosovo-Metohija was adopted.
The constitutive session of Serbian parliament will continue today and members of parliamentary committees will be elected.
Newly elected parliament speaker Tomislav Nikolic has scheduled a session to take place at 2 pm, and consultations with whips of the parliament's caucuses at 12 noon.
