Draskovic told a press conference that Serbia’s mandate begins on May 11 with the slogan, “One Europe - Our Europe”, and there will be four priorities within this framework.
The first priority is promotion of basic values of the Council of Europe – human rights, rule of law and democracy, and the other is fight against terrorism, organised crime and corruption. The third priority is building a humane Europe, and the fourth is promoting the values and aims of the Council of Europe in South East Europe, said Draskovic.
On the occasion of the upcoming Serbian chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the office of this organisation in Serbia, in cooperation with the Serbian government and Serbian parliament, will organise an event to observe the European Flag Day on May 12.
The ceremony to observe the European Flag Day will take place in front of the House of parliament of Serbia, and speakers at the event will include Minister Draskovic, Serbian parliament representative and deputy to Belgrade Mayor Zoran Alimpic as well as Special Representative of the Council of Europe Secretary General and Head of the Council of Europe Office in Belgrade Denis Huber.
Children from a local and four international schools in Belgrade will take part in the celebration, and an artistic presentation will also be held during which the European flag will be raised on the plateau in front of the House of Serbian parliament; the large European flag is leaving Strasbourg for the first time ever for this special celebration.
A statement by the Council of Europe Office says that this event will also be used to raise awareness about Serbia’s place in Europe and about European values endorsed by the Council of Europe.
Serbia became a member of the Council of Europe in April 2003.
The Council of Europe which was founded in 1949 has 46 member states today, with more than 800 million citizens, from Lisbon to Vladivostok.
