Serbia bans poultry import from Hungary amid bird flu fear

The Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management has said that it has banned the import of poultry and poultry and poultry food from Hungary so as to prevent the appearance of avian influenza.
First laboratory results of the National Laboratory for Avian Influenza in Budapest confirmed the existence of a highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of bird flu in samples of geese found in a farm near Szeged.
Samples were sent to an EU laboratory in Weybridge, UK, which will determine if it is the H5N1 virus which is potentially fatal to humans.
Director of the Veterinary Directorate of the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Dejan Krnjajic passed a Directive ordering a ban on import and transport of poultry originating from Hungary and instructing the veterinary inspectorate how to act.
Preventive and control measures will be taken due to immediate danger threatening the country and the border area with Hungary will be under special surveillance.
