The Ministry's statement adds that Red Hat is an international leader in development and distribution of open-source software and that the regional centre in Vrsac will service users in ten countries in the southeast European region. The centre will be certified in line with the highest standards.
The opening of Red Hat's representative office in Serbia clearly shows that open-source software will now be much more available to domestic users.
During the meeting Popovic and Knoblich discussed the possibility of cooperation between the Serbian government and Red Hat regarding information society development, primarily when it comes to increasing computer literacy through special terms for using software and the company's services.
The statement recalls that the Strategy for developing information society in Serbia, adopted by the government on October 5 last year, defines the goals regarding the development of information society and the plan to achieve them.
The Strategy envisages improvement and development of information and communication infrastructure in Serbia. The preconditions for achieving the goals stated in the Strategy are development and implementation of open-source software particularly in public, scientific and educational sectors, as well as insistence on open standards and inter-operational systems in line with EU recommendations stated in e-Europe plans.
