Ilic said that within the next two years, a new 202 metre tower will be built adding that it will resemble the old one in shape and design. Once it is completed, Belgrade will finally have its symbol back.
Ilic specified that €1 million was collected through voluntary donation of citizens; another million will be invested by the Belgrade City Assembly, whereas RSD 808 million was set aside by the Serbian Property Directorate.
General Director of the Serbian Radio Television Aleksandar Tijanic stated that the amount of money collected from citizens confirms that there is not a single resident in Belgrade who does not miss the object that was a beacon to everyone coming to and passing through Belgrade.
The original foundation for the Tower was laid on October 14, 1961 and the 4,000 tonne facility took four years to complete.
The new tower, designed by the CIP Institute, will be able to sustain earthquakes up to 9.1 degrees on the Mercalli scale. The conclusion of works is expected in two years.
Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica
officially announced the beginning of works on the Avala Tower on June 24, 2005.
