Serbian Minister of Science and Environmental Protection Aleksandar Popovic visited three newly-set up air quality measurement stations in Smederevo today as well as the site where a city dump is being cleared up.
Popovic stressed that the Serbian government invested RSD 18 million in these stations and announced that this is only the beginning because another 26 stations like these three will be built throughout Serbia.
He also said that both old and new stations will be integrated into a single system which will afterwards be linked via the Internet so that absolute air quality control in accordance with EU environmental standards will be set up in Serbia.
The Minister added that at any given moment citizens will be able to see the air quality status over the Internet.
Popovic said that measurement of air pollution is important in Smederevo because of the US Steel factory, whereas other polluters will be measured in other places.
He also said that radiation measurement stations will be installed on Serbian borders.
Popovic confirmed that polluters will have to pay a tax, 60% of which will go to the local self-government while 40% will go to the Serbian Environmental Fund.
