Serbian Minister of Interior Dragan Jocic pointed out that this is the one of the best DNA laboratories in Europe, and certainly the most modern in the Balkans and explained that the Serbian police now have an opportunity to clear up criminal acts quickly and efficiently.
This will give an opportunity to the Serbian police to make by themselves even the most complicated forensics and to provide assistance to the neighbouring countries.
Jocic said that Spain gave a donation worth €120,000 for the construction of this laboratory, and the Serbian government set aside €700,000 for that purpose.
Head of the EAR operational centre in Belgrade Daniel Giuglaris said that a six months training project for DNA analysis experts is being carried out currently, which will continue the next year.
Giuglaris stressed that the training will be in three fields – processing evidence on the crime scene, work with equipment, and most importantly, defending results in court, where experts are cross-examined by lawyers.
Head of the European Commission's Department for Economy and Integration Esmeralda Hernandez-Aragones said that establishing a DNA laboratory is one more important step in Serbia’s process of European integration and is an excellent example of cooperation with the Serbian government.
She recalled that the EU, through the EAR, in the period from 2001 until now, has provided €64 million to help Serbian judiciary and the Ministry of Interior, because progress in these sectors is a key factor in making progress in European integration.
