Speaking to the press after the meeting, Ljajic said that he informed Carla del Ponte about the measures that are being taken on the implementation of the Action plan and voiced hope that they will yield results.
He said that the Chief Prosecutor will submit a report to the UN Security Council on December 15 and pointed out that cooperation with the tribunal has to be continued first of all for Serbia’s sake because it cannot continue on its road towards the European Union without having fulfilled that obligation.
Ljajic said that it is expected that negotiations on concluding the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with Serbia will be resumed even if Mladic is not handed over. He explained that this might happen if Serbia displays clear political will to arrest Mladic and operational activities produce results.
He said, however, that without fulfilling the condition to handover Mladic it is only possible to resume negotiations on the SAA but not to sign the agreement.
Ljajic said that during the day he will meet with President of the tribunal Fausto Pocar and Registrar Hans Holthuis to discuss the health condition of Hague indictee Vojislav Seselj, who has been on hunger strike for more than three weeks.
He explained that this problem can be considered from three view points, legal, political and medical, but the medical aspect has priority in this case because the major concern now is Seselj’s health and life.
