Director of the Environmental Protection Directorate Miroslav Nikcevic recalled that Serbia has been implementing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) since 2002, adding that 169 countries have joined CITES until now.
Nikcevic explained that the handbook was translated from Russian and is intended to be used at the Customs Administration, Ministry of Interior and the Environmental Protection Directorate.
According to Nikcevic, the Customs Administration will most benefit from the handbook due to the shift to the integrated border control system.
As for the way the convention is being implemented in Serbia, Nikcevic said that animals are seized at border crossings if their owners do not have all the necessary documentation, the same applies to pet shops. All seized animals are then placed in the Palic zoo where a special section has been created for this purpose, he added.
