After the meeting, Nikcevic explained that the agreement includes implementation of the Action plan, that is modernisation of the existing plants in Pancevo, as well as regular obtaining of meteorological reports with the aim of permanent monitoring of air conditions.
This means that in bad weather conditions, activities in the industrial zone will be reduced to a minimum. Wastewaters will be specially treated, which are also considered to be large scale forms of pollution.
Nikcevic said that it was established that some boiler houses in Pancevo are also large scale polluters but they cannot be turned off because in that case a certain number of citizens would remain without heating.
He said that Pancevo's Refinery will conduct minimum operations in the upcoming period, not conducting activities that could increase the emission of polluting substances.
Nikcevic said that representatives of Petrohemija informed the Ministry that they will invest €10 million in the modernisation of ecological equipment in the next year. He underlined that the state has no obligation to finance the reduction of air pollution from the budget since that is the responsibility of the polluters themselves.
The Director of the Environmental Protection Directorate was last night in Pancevo with Minister of Science and Environmental Protection Aleksandar Popovic and added that in given weather conditions, the concentration of benzene in the air in Pancevo was 80 micrograms per cubic metre, while in Belgrade the level was 117 micrograms.
