Speaking at a seminar on energy efficiency and audit in Serbian industry, Pavlovic presented results of research on energy consumption in industry, and said on the occasion that investments to increase efficiency in the use of energy could be returned within four years.
He explained that energy efficiency in Serbian industry is literally three times less than the world average, which means that on average Serbia spends 0.54 kilogram of oil per dollar of GDP, while the world average is 0.19 kilogram oil per dollar of the GDP.
According to Pavlovic, major reasons for low energy efficiency in Serbian industry are outdated and dilapidating production and energy technologies, unsuitable maintenance systems, impossibility of investment in renewing these technologies, as well as “bad energy management”.
Pavlovic pointed to the fact that completing the process of privatisation is the basic condition for increasing energy efficiency and added that it is necessary to adopt the law on rational consumption of energy, which is being prepared by the SEEA.
The project “Detailed Audit of Energy Consumption in Industry” was presented at the seminar which was realised during the past three months by the SEEA and the consultancy “Kovi” from Denmark. According to the results of the project an increase in the potential of capacities could lead to a significant increase in energy efficiency in Serbian industry.
Statistics on energy consumption which were acquired through an energy audit conducted in five Serbian food factories showed that Serbian meat packaging plants spend 3.6 times more energy than in Denmark for processing one tonne of meat, while bakeries for producing the same amount of bread spend 1.5 times more electricity than bakeries in Denmark.
This project is part of the strategic project “Energy Efficiency in Industry”, which aims to improve energy efficiency and the rational consumption of energy.
