The agreement was signed today by Serbia-Montenegrin Minister of International Economic Relations Predrag Ivanovic and Swedish Ambassador to Belgrade Lars-Göran Engfeldt.
The twinning partners will be represented by Road Directorate head Branko Jocic and Swedish National Road Administration international department head Bo Henrikson.
The partnership aims to improve road maintenance management, procurement and supervision of road works, as well as computerized road and bridge databases. It is also expected to help establish a road weather information center and prepare plans and regulations for traffic safety and environmental protection.
The assistance and training is targeting the Road Directorate staff, but also local consulting firms, maintenance and construction companies, as well as other stakeholders in the road transport sector.
The twinning arrangements will complement a $55 million transport rehabilitation project for Serbia, which the World Bank approved in late May.
Engfeldt said that the arrangements will help Serbia bring its road safety regulations up to European Union standards, enhance road safety and improve road data collection.
According to Ivanovic, road rehabilitation will help Serbia develop its economy and increase citizens’ living standards.
