Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović met today with World Bank Country Manager for Serbia Nicola Pontara to discuss a new multi-phase programme for the development of the gas sector in Serbia.
Đedović Handanović noted that it is a priority for Serbia to diversify gas supply routes by building interconnections with neighbouring countries, primarily with North Macedonia and Romania.
According to her, two new interconnections should be built over the next two years.
We greatly appreciate the support of the World Bank in increasing the capacity of the existing natural gas transmission network within the country, constructing compressor stations and increasing the capacity of underground gas storage facilities, said Đedović Handanović.
The new multi-year programme would be implemented in several phases, with the first phase including the construction of the Niš-Velika Plana gas pipeline section, while phases 2 and 3 would include the expansion of existing and the construction of new gas storage facilities.
The meeting discussed the dynamics of activities, including the process of obtaining World Bank approval for programme financing, the formation of expert teams and the start of the preparation of technical documentation.
Pontara expressed satisfaction that cooperation with the Ministry of Mining and Energy and the Government of Serbia will continue through new projects in the gas sector.
