Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović met today with the newly appointed Ambassador of Japan to Serbia, Naohiro Tsutsumi, to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector.
Đedović Handanović stated that Japan is one of Serbia’s most important partners in projects in the field of supply security and the energy transition, noting that support from the Government of Japan is important for accelerating the project to construct the Bistrica pumped-storage hydropower plant.
She expressed the expectation that this year, with support from the Japanese side, the greatest progress could be made in the development of this project and that most procedures could be completed, especially regarding financing for construction.
She recalled that Serbia and Japan have had decades of successful cooperation in the energy sector, and that Japanese technology has been reliably applied for four decades in Serbian hydropower plants, such as the revitalised Bajina Bašta pumped-storage hydropower plant, which is important for balancing and storing energy from renewable sources.
The Minister noted that the second flue gas desulphurisation unit at the Nikola Tesla thermal power plant has recently been put into trial operation, where Japanese technology is used to reduce emissions of harmful gases and decrease environmental pollution.
Tsutsumi said that through his engagement he will contribute to the further strengthening of partnership relations and the implementation of joint projects of mutual importance.
