Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović stated that the Serbian parliament today adopted the Strategy for the Management of Mineral and Other Geological Resources of the Republic of Serbia until 2040, with projections until 2050.
Đedović Handanović noted that the vision of this document is for Serbia to be a country that responsibly and sustainably manages its mineral resources, while developing a technologically advanced and competitive mining sector.
The Minister emphasised that this is the first strategy in Serbia’s history that systematically and comprehensively deals with the management of mineral resources, recalling that the country has not had a valid strategic policy in this area so far, given that the last strategy was prepared in 2011 but was never adopted by the parliament.
She emphasised that natural resources in this document are not viewed as a mere raw material base, but as a strategic potential for economic and industrial development, as well as for strengthening the country’s energy security and energy independence.
The state will not allow uncontrolled exploitation of mineral resources, nor will it permit development to be blocked. The path we have chosen is the path of development, with full implementation of environmental standards, institutional control and accountability to citizens, the Minister said, pointing out that special attention has been given to critical and strategic mineral resources.
