Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Professor Dragan Glamočić, PhD, hosted at the Palace of Serbia a delegation of the Republic of Malawi, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi George Chaponda.
The meeting addressed the enhancement of bilateral cooperation in the field of agriculture and the strengthening of economic ties between the two countries.
Glamočić emphasised that Serbia attaches great importance to the development of partnership with Malawi and that there is a clear willingness to elevate cooperation to a higher level, with mutual respect and understanding of the interests of both sides.
The Minister underlined that agriculture represents a strategic sector for both countries and that there is significant potential for improving cooperation, both in the exchange of agri-food products and in the areas of institutional cooperation, exchange of technologies, knowledge and expertise.
Chaponda, noting that agriculture represents one of the most important sectors in which the Republic of Malawi invests substantial resources, informed Glamočić about the plans for the further development of the country’s agricultural sector and stated that the commercialisation of agriculture is one of the main pillars of Malawi’s future policy.
According to him, Malawi intends to invest in the development of seed production, the introduction of new technologies, strengthening resilience to climate shocks, modernisation of machinery and enhanced support to small farms.
Chaponda expressed his conviction that Serbia can be a reliable partner in this process, from whose example Malawi can learn, drawing on its experience in modernising agricultural production, improving agricultural policy and supporting small producers.
Interest was also expressed in connecting business entities of the two countries and companies operating in the field of agriculture.
Particular attention during the talks was devoted to the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Malawi, which is in the final stage of harmonisation.
Chaponda conveyed the greetings of President of the Republic of Malawi Peter Mutharika to Minister Glamočić and invited him to visit the country.
The interlocutors concluded that there is mutual readiness for close cooperation and that, in the forthcoming period, work will focus on concrete initiatives that will contribute to the joint development of resilient, efficient and modern agriculture, based on the application of modern technologies, sustainable resource management and strengthening the capacities of small and medium-sized producers, in the interest of long-term food security and stable economic development of both countries.
