Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, and Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković attended today the ceremonial opening of the Viminacium Museum, located in the premises of the Viminacium Archaeological Research Centre.
Macut emphasised that by opening this museum, we are opening not only a new exhibition space, but also a new chapter in the way we preserve, understand and present our own heritage, which connects us with Europe, the world and the times that are deeply embedded in the foundations of modern civilisation.
He said that Viminacium is a place that testifies to the depth, duration and importance of our culture and history, noting that it is also one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites in Serbia and Europe.
According to him, the state of Serbia recognises the importance of this project, and that investing in cultural heritage is not an expense but an investment in identity, education, international cooperation, reputation and sustainable development.
Macut emphasised that for this reason, the Government of Serbia, the Ministry of Culture and professional institutions continue to systematically support the protection, research and contemporary presentation of our cultural heritage.
Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković emphasized that Serbia does not view archaeology as a secondary discipline, but as one of the pillars of the preservation of cultural heritage and scientific truth about the space in which we live.
He pointed out that the Ministry of Culture has recognized Viminacium as one of the key pillars of the national cultural policy and that in the period from 2014 to 2025 it supported 33 projects related to the site, in the total amount of more than 65 million dinars.
According to him, in 2025, support continued through several projects of the Archaeological Institute, the total value of which exceeds RSD 16.5 million.
The Minister emphasised that these investments are proof that Serbia knows that its duty is not only to preserve cultural heritage, but also to enable its scientific interpretation and modern presentation.
He stated that Viminacium is visited by more than 100,000 people annually, and that with the accelerated development of road infrastructure, this site will become even more accessible to domestic and foreign visitors.
The Minister said that Specialised Expo 2027 in Belgrade is an opportunity not only for the development of cultural tourism, but also for a stronger positioning of Serbia on the cultural map of Europe, as well as for strengthening the image of our country.
