The Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management has stated that the Serbian Water Management Directorate, the Jaroslav Cerni Institute for Development of Water Resources, the Romanian Research-Development National Institute for Environmental Protection and the Hungarian VITUKI Environmental Protection and Water Resources Research Institute, will investigate the sediments in the Djerdap dam reservoir and ascertain their quality.
The aim of the investigation is to recommend measures and future monitoring based on an estimation of the quality and the degree of pollution in sediments in the dam reservoir, as well as potential effects on environment in the Danube and the Black Sea.
The project is to be carried out jointly by research teams from Serbia, Hungary and Romania according to the programme designed in the framework of the United Nations Development Program – Global Environment Facility (UNDP-GEF) Danube Regional Project (DRP). The investigation will be conducted on board the laboratory ship Argus, which has been secured for the purpose by the Environmental Protection Directorate of the Serbian Ministry of Science and Environmental Protection, reads the statement.
