Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, visited Pirot today, where he toured the Momčilov Grad (Momčilo’s Town) medieval fortress and the Pirot Grammar School, met with Mayor Vladan Vasić and spoke with citizens.
Macut underlined that Pirot deserves accelerated growth and that this is already under way, as demonstrated by the implementation of several important projects.
According to him, the renovation of the Kale fortress, which is becoming one of the most significant cultural symbols of this part of Serbia, as well as investment in schools and the entire regional education system, shows that the state is thinking long-term.
The Prime Minister underlined that Pirot and the Pirot District represent one of the most promising tourist destinations in south-eastern Serbia and that, owing to the exceptional natural potential, rich tradition, specific cultural heritage and the tourism infrastructure development, the region has been recording a growing number of tourists and an increasing tourist flow year after year.
Touring the works on the renovation of the façade of the Pirot Grammar School, whose building dates back to 1879, Macut pointed out that this project is important both for improving educational conditions for children from Pirot and its surroundings and for preserving historical heritage.
The Prime Minister discussed with the Mayor of Pirot the further development of the town and this part of Serbia, as well as new projects aimed at improving the lives of citizens.
Macut highlighted the initiative to establish an institution of higher education in Pirot, as this would mean, in his view, that young people would no longer need to leave their hometown in order to have good prospects, and he underlined that young people choosing to stay here will be the greatest success of the development of this part of Serbia.
The Serbia 2027 programme and Specialised Expo 2027 are bringing new energy to the entire country, including this area – from culture and tourism to infrastructure, the Prime Minister said, noting that investments will continue, because when Pirot moves forward, so does Serbia.
