Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Professor Dragan Glamočić, PhD, said today in Sombor that the plan is to increase hazelnut production in Serbia to 40,000 tons in the next ten years.
In the settlement Aleksa Šantić, where he visited the hazelnut estate of the Ferrero company, Glamoćić met with representatives of the AgriSerbia company, the Ferrero Group and the Embassy of Italy to Serbia.
At the meeting, it was emphasised that Serbia is today a reliable and long-term partner in the hazelnut production sector, and that cooperation with Ferrero is one of the most successful examples of direct foreign investments in Serbian agriculture.
Glamočić said that today’s meeting marks the beginning of a new phase of cooperation based on knowledge, coordination and sustainability and announced the formation of a working group for the development of the first hazelnut district of excellence in West Bačka, which will include local governments, scientific institutions, chambers and companies like Ferrero.
Italian Ambassador to Serbia Luca Gori said that agriculture is one of the most important pillars of bilateral cooperation between Italy and Serbia.
The Ferrero company has so far established several nurseries in Serbia, from which more than 1.8 million hazelnut seedlings have been distributed, which has enabled the establishment of more than 3,360 hectares of new plantations in the country and the export of around 500,000 seedlings to Romania and neighbouring countries.
