Aleksandar Popovic
He said that a third of regulations which Serbia must adopt in order to enter the EU are in the field of environmental protection. However, not all of them are laws, but there are many directives and by-laws which need not be adopted in the parliament.
Minister Popovic said that the preparation of the laws on waste management, protection from ionising radiation, biological research, and fishery is drawing to an end. The Ministry is also preparing laws on forests and waters, protection of air and environment, and chemicals management.
The Minister said that the environmental protection legislation is not the only problem in Serbia, since there is still not a single damp for storing hazardous waste, nor an installation for its processing.
The completion of all above-mentioned projects will depend on the funds that the Serbian government will set aside for ecology, but on the willingness of the authorities to change things as well. The Minister said that "the state of affairs in the field of ecology is not bright, and we will need a lot of time and effort, but it is important to start making big steps and work with the utmost effort".
