The construction of this 1,776-kilometre long oil pipeline is considered to be one of the major projects of the century, and its putting into operation should contribute to global energy safety.
Of the total of 1,776 kilometres, 1,076 kilometres run through Turkey. This project is expected to boost the prosperity and stability of the entire region.
Apart from linking Europe and Asia in this way, this project is a proof that construction of an East-West corridor is possible outside central Asia as well. Also, this oil pipeline is part of a much longer corridor, the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline, which links the two continents.
Due to the importance of this project, it is called "Silk Road of the 21st century".
