In a press conference held after his visit to the Nis district court, Stojkovic said that the situation in Serbian prisons has improved considerably and that it is much better than in prisons in Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Macedonia.
Stojkovic said that the main problem is the fact that the Belgrade district court, which was built in 1952 with a capacity for 440 prisoners, now has 790 imprisoned persons. He added that the Ministry managed to adapt part of the district prison, bearing in mind that persons accused of organised crime and war crimes are placed there.
According to Stojkovic, the prison on Ustanicka Street in Belgrade should be adapted by September for such prisoners, which will make more room in other parts of the district prison.
Stojkovic met today with president and judges of the Nis District Court, presidents of regional courts, district and municipal prosecutors, as well as the head of council of magistrates. The meeting focused on semi-annual report of Nis courts and implementation of the National Judicial Reform Strategy.
