Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović stated today that infrastructure integration in Southeast Europe and the creation of a connected and efficient market are essential for the region to effectively address challenges related to electricity, gas and oil supply security, delivery reliability and the provision of affordable energy prices.

Serbia’s leadership position in power sector

Speaking at the Financial Times Energy Transition Summit in Athens, Đedović Handanović said that Serbia’s strategic documents adopted over the past two years set out the goal of decarbonising the energy sector in a sustainable manner and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
According to her, Southeast Europe must enhance cooperation with neighbouring countries and the EU, and consider new technologies such as small modular nuclear reactors in order to overcome these challenges and carry out the energy transition sustainably.
While private-sector investment is especially important in the renewable energy sector, the public sector plays a leading role in ensuring balancing capacity, the Minister noted. She highlighted the construction of the 650 MW Bistrica pumped-storage hydropower plant, which should begin next year, as the most significant project in this regard.
She also added that state energy company EPS’s portfolio will become significantly greener starting this year and over the coming years, with the construction of more than 1 GW of solar power plants and 200 MW of battery storage, which represents one of the largest renewable energy projects in Europe.
