Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, attended today, together with President of the Republic Aleksandar Vučić and members of the Government, the official ceremony held to mark the Ministry of the Interior Day and Police Day.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić emphasised that today, 214 years since the founding of the Ministry, we proudly and respectfully celebrate the courage, dedication and unwavering commitment of all members of the Ministry of the Interior, who work every day to protect the peace and safety of Serbia.
Speaking about the police’s achievements over the past year, Dačić pointed out that overall crime has reached its lowest level in the past 25 years.
He noted that general crime in 2024 was 45% lower compared to 2001, while the number of murders and aggravated murders in 2024 was the lowest in the past 25 years – reduced more than fourfold.
According to him, in the past year alone, 26 organised criminal groups were prosecuted, and in cooperation with Europol, INTERPOL and police forces across Europe, members of numerous “Balkan cartel” criminal groups were arrested, with tonnes of narcotics, millions of euros, luxury vehicles and watches confiscated.
Furthermore, during this year, which saw a particularly intensified and uncompromising fight against crime, criminal charges were filed in the first five to six months against 525 individuals, Dačić stated, adding that Serbian border police prevented 14,923 persons from illegally crossing the state border. He also noted that members of the Emergency Situations Sector responded to approximately 40,000 incidents and saved over 1,200 lives.
President Vučić expressed his gratitude to members of the Ministry of the Interior for defending and safeguarding Serbia on a daily basis.
He underlined that justice is the highest value of any society, along with peace, order and social wellbeing, and to achieve it, Serbia will need a stronger and better-equipped police force.
At the ceremony, awards and recognitions were presented to the most successful members of the Ministry of the Interior.
This morning, in honour of the Ministry of the Interior Day and Police Day, Dačić laid a wreath at the memorial in New Belgrade, in remembrance of police officers who gave their lives in the service of protecting peace and safety for the citizens of Serbia.
Also, as is tradition, tributes were paid in several locations across Serbia to police officers who lost their lives defending the homeland and while carrying out their regular duties.
